What is Axiom, Conjecture and Theorem?

Image
Doing mathematics without understanding the basic concept is quite boring. Here are the three most important terms that form the basis of mathematics. What are Axioms? An axiom or postulate is a statement that is taken to be true to serve as a base or starting point for further reasoning and argument. An axiom is a fact and these do not need proofs. Why do we need an Axiom?   It severs as basis for ‘formal system’. A framework to prove or drive further theorems.   Most importantly, to enable ourselves to do maths. E.g.   In Euclidean geometry, following are the axioms.   Given two distinct points, there is exactly one line that contains them. All right angles are equal to each other. Etc. What is Conjecture? A conjecture is a conclusion or proposition that is suspected to be true based on the observations but no proof or disproof has yet been found.      It is more like a hypothesis.     Conjecture is based on inductive reas...

Formulae for Surface area and volume

Image
Whenever we are solving any numerical, a formula plays an important role in its solution. Most of the time we know about the solution but forgets the formula., So here are the few formulae that are going to help in solving the Mathematics pedagogy problems. Surface Area : The area of the outer part or uppermost layer of something. Volume : The amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container. 2 dimensional figures do not have volume. Surface area of 2 Dimensional figures: Circle - 𝝿 r² Square - side² Rectangle - length* breadth Triangle - ½*base*height Surface area and volume of 3 - Dimensional figures: C.S.A: Curved Surface Area or Lateral Surface Area T.S.A : Total Surface Area r - Radius h - height (here vertical height) l - length ( cuboid) b -breadth l - slant height ( cone, frustum) r₁ - radius 1 r₂ - radius 2   Figure    C.S.A  T.SA   Volume  Cuboid  2h(l+b)  2(lb+bh+h...

What is Vygotsky's theory of socio- cultural development ?

Lev S. Vygotsky , a Russian psychologist, a social constructivist (one who says a child can construct his own knowledge and specially here through social interactions) whose main focus was socio- cultural aspects. He died at the age of 38. Since most of his work was in Russian, a lot had been translated but still some left. Three important aspects on which Vygotsky's theory is based Social interaction  : Interaction with family members, friends, teachers etc. Language : A tool for communication Culture : Age old traditions, values etc. Vygotsky said that first language comes than comes thought. Vygotsky"s Theory stresses on the pivotal role of social interaction in the development of cognition. Society helps in "making meaning". Development occurs through social learning. Some other important terms: Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): A difference between what a child can achieve independently and what a child can achieve with guidance and encouragement from the M...
